The Simpsons: Treehouse of Horror XXII (Oct 30th 2011)

8:00 pm: Here we go. Starting out with the parody of Hitchcock Movies. Homer seeks the kids’ haul of candy but fails to get it. Nothing gust-bustingly funny in the intro, but still entertaining. I’m just glad to see new episodes of The Simpsons after the baseball postseason concluded (although I enjoyed the World Series).

8:05: The first segment of three opens with Homer regaining consciousness for unknown reasons. He is paralyzed. He remembers that a black widow spider bit him. He learns to communicate with farts (with Lisa running through the alphabet and him farting when she reaches the right letter). I find fart humor funny, so I like this segment.

8:12: “Dial D for Diddly”. It’s always entertaining to see Ned Flanders killing (and swearing too!). Ned thinks he is killing in the name of the lord, but in reality it’s Homer’s voice that Flanders mistakes for God. When Homer’s secret is revealed, Flanders realizes he is going to Hell and unleashes a few choice swears, including “backside!”. When Ned asks “can this get any worse??” his wife appears from Hell and asks him to come back to bed as the segment ends. The second of three segments is traditionally the weakest; I think that’s the case tonight. Nice job by Harry Shearer as the voice of God.

8:22: Here comes the Avatar parody segment. An alien version of Bart has
“testicle to testicle” sex with a female alien. She is knocked up with “1000 fetuses”.  We now know that even when Bart and Milhouse are aliens, Bart is still much cooler than Milhouse. Nice Portland rain joke worked into this segment. I feel like this segment didn’t hold my interest as much as The Simpsons usually does. I’m not sure why

8:29: The closing segment makes it clear that the holidays are just around the corner, as the cast asks the viewing audience to go shopping with money they don’t have to energize a stagnant economy; a plea is made to avoid homemade gifts. Marge proclaims that making a homemade sweater will cost 27 Americans their jobs, as Christmas music plays in the background.

Last Thoughts: This wasn’t a great episode, but it did make me laugh out loud a few times. In comparison to other Treehouse of Horror episodes, I don’t think this one stands out. Still, I’m always glad to see new episodes of Simpsons and Family Guy, even if they aren’t always as fresh as they were in the past. 6.5/10
